Bath, England's most elegant Georgian city, has been an important centre since the dawn of civilisation, when the early Celts discovered the hot springs which have comforted and healed so many hundreds of thousands of people down the centuries. Yet the modern city which is so much appreciated by the tourists dates really from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The Royal Crescent and the Circus epitomise the glorious Georgian elegance of Bath, and have been much emulated elsewhere. John Wood the elder started his magnificent work at Queen Square and moved up the hill to his most exciting project, the Circus. He never lived to see it finished. It was left to his son, John Wood the younger, to finish the Circus, and then to go on to build the magnificent Royal Crescent.,
The history of Bath Abbey reflects the vicissitudes of religious life in England. In 676 the first religious structure was built, a monastry using the stone from Roman ruins. The first king of all England, Edgar, was crowned in the monastry's abbey .
The abbey was replaced by a large Roman style priory in 1090. This dominated the sky-line for a couple of centuries but by 1499 it lay in ruins, neglected by the small and demoralised group of monks that lived there. Oliver King started to rebuild it but Henry VIII, following his row with Rome, put a stop to it in 1539 before a roof could be erected . It was not until 1617 that the present building was completed.
This unusual bridge was built by Robert Adam in 1774 for one William Pultney, property developer, who wanted a link to the other side of the River Avon where he planned a neo-classical development of gracious town houses. Built on three arches, the bridge supports a number of shops. Pultney went on to create part of his development, though with war with France breaking out the money ran out before he could complete it.
John Wood the elder returned to the city of his birth in 1727 and enthusiastically embraced the idea of Ralph Allen to build a new city in the local stone. Queens Square was the first project of this apprentice carpenter with some knowledge of architecture!
