Set in a high amphitheatre a few kilometres inland from Cannes, Grasse is undoubtedly the capital of perfume. Formerly known for its leather tanneries, it expanded into perfume in the 16th century when the Italian trend for scented gloves became fashionable in France. Grasse’s microclimate was ideal for the production of the flowers to mask the odour of leather.
In the 18th century Grasse invented new methods of producing flower essences though that is largely out of date as nowadays perfume makers tend to use synthetic essences. However Grasse still supplies 7% of the world’s perfume makers with its essences. Everywhere you run you will find a perfume factory.
Grasse was also the birthplace of the 18th-century painter Honore Fragonard.
The Grasse tourist office has full details of how and when to visit the fields and perfume factories, including famous names like Fragonard and Galimard (where you can even pay for a session to create your own personal perfume!).
