Curiously, although Cannes is so well-known today, little is known of the history of this ancient hill town, formerly a citadel built on Mont Chevalier (le Suquet). Its fortunes changed dramatically in 1834 when an English aristocrat, Lord Brougham, was of necessity detained there because of a nearby outbreak of plague and fell amorous of its beauty and climate. He wintered in Cannes for the next 34 years. Other members of the English, then Russian aristocracy
followed in his wake, and by the beginning of the 20th century Cannes was a celebrated resort.
Today it is certainly most famous for its Cannes International Film Festival in May, which took off after the Second World War, but its many charms and mild climate make Cannes a year-round resort.
Situated in the old castle, it has an excellent archaeological collection from the area around Cannesand some fascinating musical instruments from around the world.
The legendary esplanade, edged by luxury hotels and shops, bars and nightclubs, a mecca for celebrity-spotters, particularly during the Cannes Festival – although it is all but impossible to get near it then.
Inland at the east of La Croisette lies an area with a wealth of 19th century mansions, which the aristocracy built in an extravagant melange of styles. Often the luxuriant gardens afford only a glimpse of these treasures.
