Cagnes-sur-Mer is a town of many parts: medieval town, fishing village, beach resort, and modern town. Its history was linked to that of the Grimaldis of Monaco, who built a fortress in agnes-sur-Mer in 1310, later developed into a beautifully decorated castle by Henri Grimaldi in 1620. Painters such as Renoir, who lived here from 1903 until his death in 1919, were attracted to Cagnes-sur-Mer by its light and colour.
The medieval ground floor hosts a display of local history.
The 17th-century Grimaldi reception rooms on the first floor house an exhibition of Mediterranean art with a plethora of famous names.
The tower above has a panoramic view of the Alps and the Mediterranean.
Once home to Renoir, who came to Cagnes-sur-Mer to treat his arthritis, this house in an olive grove retains some of his furniture, but particularly many of his later paintings and sculptures.
The medieval town is perched high up, with winding streets surrounding the old castle. Some lovely old houses remain (Cagnes-sur-Mer tourist office organises guided tours).
