Godshill has a delightful 14th century church behind which lives a legend that gave the village its name:
Originally intended to stand on the water meadows, the stones kept disappearing from the church building site, and reappearing at the top of the hill. The villagers took this as a divine message to build the church on the hill, hence 'God's Hill'.......or.....was it the work of the devil trying to make it hard for parishioners to pay their respects to the opposition...?
