Basque linen, with its tradition dating back to the
mists of time, is much sought after both by the lucky people living in the area
and the tourists that flock to the area every summer.
In the old days the quality and authenticity was assured by
the Syndicat des Tisseurs which jealously guarded the justified
reputation of this ancient craft, even if modern methods of production have,
naturally, been introduced. Only the manufacturers approved by the
Syndicat had the right to label their linen Basque d'Origine.
One of the great centres of Basque linen is at Coarraze
(actually just in the Béarn but nevertheless considered near enough to
qualify). Choosing a manufacturer for the TREASURES OF THE SOUTH WEST
was not easy but eventually we settled on a small family-run manufacturer, Cherbé,
which has kept its individuality. This firm has been making top quality Basque
linen since the 1880s. Today the two sisters that now run it watch over every
step of production with obvious pride and ensure the highest quality.
NEW! Less traditional
but definitely very chic: Robert le Héros is the designer range of
another linen maker, this time in Orthez. Robert is in fact four young ladies
with a startling flair for evocative and original design, and we are proud to be
able to offer to the world some examples of their undoubted flair.
