The area in the Landes north of Capbreton and Hossegor is known as the Marensin, a land of lakes and forests, and Soustons is the most important town in the Marensin.
It has some industrial activity, but it is dominated by a large and lovely lake, fringed by reeds and woods, that seems to stretch forever round another headland. Naturally tourism is very important, as are all aquatic sports.
It is in this area that the late French President, Mitterand, had his farm and enjoyed his holidays, and a sympathetic statue of the President forever walking his dog has been erected as a memorial.
