Pouillon lies in the south of the Landes, where the flat pine trees landscape has given way to glorious rolling hills and valleys with a luxurious mixture of copse and woodland. The town itself is surprisingly elegant, with lovely houses lying in leafy glades that vie with the streets for supremacy. The canton of Pouillon - the town and villages around it - is mainly agricultural and welcomes tourists. It takes care over its appearance - it is classified "three flowers" for its colourful displays during the summer.
Its agricultural roots has led it to develop a traditional gascon sport, Couse Landaise, whose local afficionados are knowns as the "Coursayres des Arrigans". It is also a good place to eat.
