For a small town in the middle of the Béarn countryside, Monein comes as a remarkably pleasant surprise. Its huge central square would be the envy of many a larger town - indeed its elegant proportions, led Henri IV to label it the `Paris of the Béarn'.
And then there is the church, which is more of a cathedral than a small town church. Inside the soaring timber work is itself a wonder to behold and worth a visit.
Monein is also the centre of some of the best vineyards in the Jurançon apellation.
