Marciac is a bastide town founded in the 13th century on one of the main routes of the pilgri;age to St Jacques de Compostelle. Its fine central square is bounded by well-preserved arcades. Its church boasts the highest clock tower in the Gers, and indeed the two spires - the second is on an old church now housing the tourist office - can be seen from a long way off.
But besides being a good example of a bastide, Marciac is a very lively town that has gained an international reputation for its August jazz festival, and indeed for its programme of musical activities throughout the year.
It also has a 30 HA lake nearby which is a major attraction to holiday-makers.
