The holiday town of Hossegor lies on the opposite side of the Boudigau canal to Capbreton. The name Hossegor is a corruption of Horse Guards:
Round the turn of the century it became popular with French artists and writers, and there was grand talk of a `New Atlantis' or `City of the Sun'. This colony was responsible at least in part for the careful development of the town, with a number of fine houses.
Hossegor boasts of a `microclimate' thanks to its position on the coast and bordered by the pine forest and the large marine lake. It is a favourite spot with surfers, thanks to the surf created by the remarkable undersea chasm (see Capbreton)
Main interest is in winter and spring - sailboards and bathers take over in summer. Many gulls and waders in the salt-water lake. There is an embankment which juts in to the sea and provides a good vantage point for divers, razorbills, gannets shearwaters and petrels. Expert watching advice is to visit the lake at low tide and the embankment at high tide.
One of many lakes in the Landes area, the Etang noir and its marshes were declared a nature reserve for the rich flora and batrachian (frog and toad) population. 59 Ha in area.
