With its small winding streets Espelette is an unusual Basque town, but its neat and flowered houses bear testament to its traditions.
It is important today as the centre of the famous piment d'Espellete growing area. This succulent, spicy pepper is indispensable to the Basque piperade and other typical dishes. This is celebrated in a special fair at the end of October.
It is also a centre for the breeding of Potoks, a sturdy small horse once much used as pit-ponies in Britain.
