Since the 16th century the French have been going to Cambo-les-Bains to take the cures. Among its more famous clients was the author Edmond Rostand, author of Cyrano de Bergerac and sufferer from pleurisy, who was so taken with the town that he built a magnificent house - now open to the public.
The town is divided into two by the river Nive, and the lower part, on the river itself, has retained much of its Basque charm.
