The village was founded at the end of the 12th century by monks, and is a rare example of a bastide in the Basque country. In earlier times it was an important stop on the trade route from Pampelona to Bayonne, and a number of the houses were built as inns, with the mules stabled on the ground floor and the restaurant above on the first floor.
Today it is counted as one of the most beautiful and well-kept villages in the region, showing a remarkable homogeneity in its Basque architecture and decoration, the lintels above the doors often inscribed with the name and date of the first proprietor.
