Larressingle - Very picturesque small fortified village. Known as the Carcassone of the Gers, this small fortified village has survived the turbulent centuries remarkably well. Its 270 metres of ramparts, which protected the bishops of Condom until the 16th century, are still largely intact.
Bayonne. Large city and port on the mouth of the Adour
Old castle. High on a hill overlooking the town lies the old castle of Mauléon, the Chateau du Malus-Leo or roughly speaking the bad lion; from where the old lords of the Soule surveyed their domaine. The walls are still largely intact and you can walk round the parapet. There is a small display on the prehistory and history of the area. The picture on the Medieval fortifications page is of Mauléon castle.
