The Hotel de la Reine Sancie at Sauveterre-de-Béarn sits on the banks of one of France's top salmon rivers, the swift moving Gave d'Oloron, on the site of the old medieval Maison du Sénéchal, the arches of which form the foundations of the present building.
High above it the ruined castle and fortifications of old Sauveterre dominate the skyline. Beside it sits the remains of the old Pont de la Légende (where Queen Sancie was thrown into the river and survived her ordeal) and this unsurpassed romantic setting makes the hotel one of the most photographed sites in Béarn.
The Hotel de la Reine Sancie is a small family hotel where the accent is on informality. Recently renovated to the highest standards, each room offers luxurious comfort with outstanding views of the rushing river below and on high, the spectacular illuminations of the medieval ramparts.
First floor rooms have a private balcony. Each room has en suite bath or shower room, w.c. and hairdryer. Family rooms have a small separate bedroom for up to two children. Each room has its own phone number with the possibility of a second line for personal fax or computer - and TV with european stations.
Recently taken over by two Irish brothers, there is a restaurant and in summer you can eat al fresco on the terrace overlooking the river.
